Call His name Jesus

“Call His name Jesus”

Text: Luke 1:26-38

          Matthew 1:18-25

The name that was given to Mary and Joseph was not just a random event.  It wasn’t something that felt right to them in doing.  In gives us several reasons why names are selected:

1.    A Biblical name could record some aspect of a person’s birth

Genesis 25:25 NKJV

25 And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau.

2.    Biblical names sometimes expressed the parent’s reaction to the birth of a child

Genesis 25:26 NKJV

26 Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob

3.    Biblical names sometimes used to secure the solidarity of family ties

Judges 8:31NKJV

31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. (Abimelech means my father is King.)

4.    Biblical names could be used to communicate God’s message

Hannah- Favor or Grace

Solomon- Peace

David- Beloved

5.    Biblical names were also used to establish an affiliation with God

Abba- Papa or Daddy

Adonai- Lord or Master

Immanuel- God with us

6.    Biblical names are given to establish authority over another, or to indicate a new beginning or new direction in a person’s life.

Abram- Exalted Father = Abraham- Father of many nations

Jacob- supplanter/ heel grabber= Israel- God perseveres

The scriptures gives us insight into the Name of Jesus and God’s point of view in the name:

 Hebrews 1:1-4 NKJV

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worldswho being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sinssat down at the right hand of the Majesty on highhaving become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

·       God originally spoke to other men to us.

·       Now he speaks thru the person of His son

Jesus is not just a speaker with a cable connected to a microphone that the Father has.  Jesus IS the inner thoughts, life and acts of the Father in Human Flesh.

Jesus is the Throne of God

·       by His Son

·       He has appointed heir of all things,

·       He made the worlds

·       being the brightness of His glory

·       the express image of His person

·       upholding all things by the word of His power

·       Himself purged our sins

·       sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

·        having become so much better than the angels

·       He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

John 14:9 NKJV

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Jesus name is Great because:

·       He inherited a great name from the Greatest of all

·       He achieved the Greatness of His name

·       He is in all ways the definition of His name

Philippians 2:9-11 NKJV

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

·       Therefore God also has highly exalted Him

·       given Him the name which is above every name

·       at the name of Jesus

·       every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth

·       every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Hebrews tells us that He inherited a greater name, but Philippians declares that God Him a very unique name above every name.

This specific Person:  The God Man

1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

·       He worked in Christ

·       He raised Him from the dead

·       seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all

·       principality and power and might and dominion

·       every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

·       He put all things under His feet

·       gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Why did God give him this Name?

For God’s benefit?

So God could Reign supreme?

So God could have Authority?

No, He gave Jesus the name, as an investment for the benefit for the church.

The Purpose of the Name

Colossians 2:15 NKJV

·       triumphing over them in it.

The Mighty Overcoming Name

Hebrews 2:14 NKJV

14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

·       He Himself likewise shared in the same

·       through death

·       He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

Luke 11:21-22 NKJV

21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. 22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.
