“HOW TO HAVE VICTORY OVER ANGER”

INTRODUCTION: Uncontrolled anger results in many other human problems.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 NKJV

 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools.

Psalm 37:8 NKJV

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.”

1. WHAT IS HUMAN ANGER?

A. Anger is an emotional disturbance or reaction, a soulish action not a Holy Spirit action.

B. Anger comes from a feeling, your soulical part: injury, insult, vexation, resentment, distress, hostility.

C. Anger is a negative and depressive emotion.

D. Anger is a danger to society.

2. THE SOURCE OF ANGER

A. Words stir up anger.

Proverbs 15:1 NKJV

A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.”

B. Jealousy becomes anger.

C. Pride becomes anger.

D. Uncontrolled temper, when one is not pleased with someone, things, or circumstances, they can become angry.

3. THE FIRST OUTBURST OF ANGER

A. Cain murdered his brother Abel. This anger came from the spirit of religion.

Genesis 4:5-8 NKJV

but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

B. Religion can still produce unreasonable outbursts of anger.

4. THE DEVIL SHOWS GREAT ANGER

Revelation 12:12 NKJV

Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

5. WHAT WILL ANGER DO?

A. Anger can blind the mind to reason and common sense.

Proverbs 27:4 NKJV

Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent, But who is able to stand before jealousy?”

B. Anger demands retaliation; it wants to hurt others.

II Samuel 13:22, 28 KJV

“And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. v. 28, Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.”

C. Anger can make a person physically ill. It can cause organs of the body to not function properly and can cause ulcers.

D. Anger burns.

Genesis 44:18 NKJV

Then Judah came near to him and said: “O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s hearing, and do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh.”

6. WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT ANGER

A. Proverbs 22:24 KJV

“Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:”

B. Ecclesiastes 7:9 NKJV

Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.”

 

C. Proverbs 14:17 NKJV

A quick-tempered man acts foolishly,
And a man of wicked intentions is hated.

D. Proverbs 19:11 NKJV

The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger,
And his glory is to overlook a transgression.”

E. Proverbs 21:14

“A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.”

F. Proverbs 27:4  

“Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?”

G. Proverbs 16:32

“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”

7. HOW ANGER CAN BE OVERCOME

We must control our emotions by our spirit.

A.    By forgiving easily and quickly

Matthew 5:25-26 NKJV

25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.”

 

B.    By receiving Christ’s Spirit

Romans 8:9

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

8. GOD’S ANGER

A. God’s wrath to come

Matthew 3:7

“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”

 

B.    God’s anger and displeasure towards Israel

Deuteronomy 9:18

“And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.”

 

C.    The fierceness of God’s anger

Deuteronomy 13:17 NKJV

So none of the accursed things shall remain in your hand, that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of His anger and show you mercy, have compassion on you and [a]multiply you, just as He swore to your fathers,”

 

9. JESUS TAUGHT ON ANGER

Matthew 5:22

“But I say ;unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment . . .”

 

10. PAUL SAID . . .

A. Ephesians 4:26

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath.”

B. Anger is a work of the flesh.

Galatians 5:20

“Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies.”

D.    Ephesians 4:31

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice.”

E.     Colossians 3:8

“But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”

11. EFFECTS OF ANGER

A. King Saul had spells of depression because of anger.

I Samuel 16:14

“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. Anger drove King Saul like a slave from God, from his friends, and from the throne of Israel.”

B. Stalin died in anger. It has been recorded that the Communist dictator, Joseph Stalin, died in a fit of rage.
